Background

The year 2015 marked 10 years since the first project in the field of future studies was conducted in Iceland. The project was called Country Life 2025 and looked at various scenarios for the possible future of rural areas in Iceland. Although the study was not widely distributed, it was considerably influential. Haraldur Benediksson, then Director of the Farmers Association of Iceland, described his experience as follows:

“I use the study quite effectively in my work here [...] and I can safely say that what our participation in the study taught us has been taken on board and has been of tangible benefit or use.” (Ólafur Jónsson, 2011)

This project was followed by numerous others for both public and private parties. The effect and success of these projects has recently been looked into, and there is general satisfaction on the topic. The findings of this study were presented at the 2015 Þjóðarspegillinn Conference in Social Sciences at the University of Iceland. Click here for the paper>>
